About Katie Herman

Katie Herman is a freelance book editor based in Brooklyn, NY. She provides a range of editorial services, including developmental editing, substantive line editing, copyediting, and proofreading, to authors, independent presses, and major publishing houses.

Katie was an editor from 2005 to 2010 at Soho Press, a renowned independent publisher of literary fiction, literary nonfiction, and crime fiction with an international bent. While at Soho, she edited a wide range of titles including Rock Paper Tiger by Lisa Brackmann (New York Times and USA Today bestseller), Light Fell by Evan Fallenberg (2009 Stonewall Book Award for Literature), Matt Beynon Rees’s CWA Dagger-winning Omar Yussef mystery series, A Stranger on the Planet by Adam Schwartz (Moment Magazine 2011 Emerging Writer Award), A Tiger’s Heart: The Story of a Modern Chinese Woman by Aisling Juanjuan Shen, and Alcestis by Katharine Beutner (2011 Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction).

Katie has a BA in English and history from Columbia University. In 2010, she left Soho Press to pursue an MFA in creative writing at the University of Maryland, which she completed in 2013. Since 2010, she has worked as an independent editor and has taught writing and literature for the University of Maryland and American University and copyediting for NYU. She has served as an editorial mentor for the Center for Fiction’s Emerging Writer Fellowship. Her specialties are literary fiction, crime fiction, and memoir.

Katie is also a poet. Her poetry and criticism have been published in Poetry NorthwestLEVELERTikkun, and elsewhere.
