Katie Herman is an independent editor specializing in fiction. She provides a range of editorial services, including developmental editing, substantive line editing, and copyediting. Katie works with authors seeking traditional publication, independent authors, and both large and small publishing houses. She particularly loves guiding first-time authors through the editing and revision process.
Katie was an editor from 2005 to 2010 at Soho Press, a renowned independent publisher of literary fiction, literary nonfiction, and crime fiction with an international bent. While at Soho, she edited a wide range of fiction and the occasional memoir. Her titles included Rock Paper Tiger by Lisa Brackmann (New York Times and USA Today bestseller), Light Fell by Evan Fallenberg (2009 Stonewall Book Award for Literature), Matt Beynon Rees’s CWA Dagger-winning Omar Yussef mystery series, A Tiger’s Heart: The Story of a Modern Chinese Woman by Aisling Juanjuan Shen, and Alcestis by Katharine Beutner (2011 Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction).
Katie has a BA in English and history from Columbia University. In 2010, she left Soho Press to earn an MFA in creative writing at the University of Maryland. Since 2010, she has worked as an independent editor and has taught writing and literature for the University of Maryland and American University and copyediting for NYU. She has served as an editorial mentor for the Center for Fiction’s Emerging Writer Fellowship. Her specialties are literary fiction, upmarket commercial fiction, and crime fiction.
Katie is also a poet. Her poetry and criticism have been published in Poetry Northwest, LEVELER, Tikkun, and elsewhere.
